Silver Jewellery
Sterling silver is the term that refers to 92.5% pure silver, often also known as 925 silver. Silver is too soft for daily wear if it’s 100% pure, therefore it is mixed with alloys to provide a residual hardness.
Silver Jewellery Hallmarks
Where necessary each individual piece of jewellery is hallmarked with four or five marks – the first is the maker mark, the lion and 925 marks denote the piece is made from sterling silver. The Tudor Rose shows it was marked in the Sheffield Assay Office and the letter mark reflects the year of production.
Cleaning Silver Jewellery
If you look after your silver jewellery in a sensible manner, it will continue to look beautiful for years to come. Unfortunately, silver does tarnish and a quick rub with a silver cloth (which can be purchased from most good jewellery stores) will help prevent this.
